휴가 술자리 후기 - 우리 세대와 텍스트

 휴가 첫날, 책마을 정모에서 고기를 구어먹다가 나온 이야기였는데, "어느새 야설을 찾아보기 어려워졌다"라는 지원이의 말부터 시작되었다. 그리고 닷새 동안의 휴가 술자리들은 이 이야기를 시발점으로 해서 어떤 '주제'를 가지고 진행되었던 것 같다.
 VT 시절부터 널리 공유되었던 야설, 그러나 어느 순간 부터 야설은 우리에게 잊혀진 무언가가 되어버렸다. 아마 많은 이들의 하드 디스크 속에 수십 기가에 달하는 동영상이 있을테고, 혹은 이미지 파일 - 은꼴사라고 불리우는 - 들도 있을 수 있겠다. 몇몇 사람들은 상당 수의 에로게를 보유하고 있을테고.. 그러나 이제 '야설'을 보유하고 있는 사람은 아마 극히 드물게다. 무리도 아닌게, 어느샌가 야설은 우리 곁에서 찾아보기 어려운 것이 되어버렸기 때문이다.
 옛날, 그러니까 ADSL의 전국적 보급으로 인터넷 인구가 폭증하고 많은 사람들이 야후 코리아나 라이코스를 검색 엔진으로 쓰던 시절이 있었다. 정보의 공유, 자료의 공유라는 위대한(?) 카피 레프트 정신을 내세운 와레즈들이 명멸하던 그 때, 우리는 검색 엔진에 '야설'을 치면 수많은 웹페이지들을 만날 수 있었다. 수많은 작품들이 쉽게 구해지던 시절이다. 그리고 그 어느 곳 보다도 기억에 남을 수 밖에 없는 그 이름, '소라넷'. (물론 지금도 존속하고 있는 공간이지만, 그 곳은 예전만큼의 대중성을 상실한지 오래다. 한때는 '성인물=소라넷'이라는 공식이 성립되던 적도 있었으니까..) PC통신과 초창기 인터넷을 통해 급격히 외연을 확장했던 야설들은 모니터를 뛰쳐나가 본격 성인 출판 시장이나 모바일 시장에 진출하기도 했었다. '추월색'이나 '인봉거사' 같은 '작가'들은 팬클럽까지 몰고 다니던 시절이었다.
 그러나 전국민의 인터넷 환경이 모뎀에서 ADSL로, 또 ADSL에서 VDSL로 발전하는 가운데 점차 야설은 우리의 곁을 떠나게 된다. 야사가 야설을 대체하고, 또 야동이 야사를 대체하는 시대가 온 것이다. 그리고 오늘날 우리는 일본에서 그저께 출시된 AV DVD를 오늘 초고화질로 다운 받을 수 있는, 그야말로 'IT강국'다운 첨단 성인물 문화를 누리고 있다. 이러한 기술문명의 발전 속에, 옛 시절의 추억을 함께했던 야설은 잊혀지고 말았다.
 자, 네이버 검색창에 '야설'을 쳐봐라. 일단 성인 인증 창이 뜨니까 인증하고, 검색 결과를 둘러보자. 페이지가 많이 뜨긴 한다. 그러나, 안타깝게도 정작 우리가 원하는 바로 그 '야설'을 제공하는 페이지를 찾긴 힘들다. 야설은 이제 우리가 알던 그 '야설'들이라기 보다는, 하나의 개념어에 가까운 단어가 되어 쓰이고 있다. ('야설' 같은, '야설'처럼 이라는 수식어를 생각해보자. 재밌는건, '팬픽 야설'이라는 용례가 생겼다는 건데.. 이건 다음에 이야기하고.) 야설이 무언지 모르는 사람은 없지만, 정작 이제 야설을 보는 사람은 없다. 그리고 야설을 찾기도 힘들다. 패킷 충전만 한다면, 성인물 본연의 목적에 충실한(?) 원초적 자극을 제공하는 야동들을 종류별로 골라서 받을 수 있는 세상에서, 누가 야설을 보겠는가?

 그러나 이같은 '야설의 종언'은 단순히 야설의 추억을 떠올리며 아쉬워하는 것에 그칠 문제는 아닌 것 같다. 분명 야설은 우리들의 추억을 상기시켜주는 흥미로운 소재고, 또 야동에 비해 창의력(?)과 상상력(?)을 증진시켜준다는, 단순히 감각적/말초적 쾌락 이상의 것을 보여주는 도구라고 '변호'할 수도 있겠다. 그러나 내가 말하고 싶은 바는 그 것이 아니다. 단순히 IT 기술 발전 속에 야설이 사라지고 야동이 등장했다, 라는 이야기에서 그치고 싶은 것이 아니다. '야설에서 야동으로의 전환'이라는 형식이, 다른 분야에서 그대로 적용되고 있지 않은가, 하는게 내가 가진 생각이다. 그리고 이 것은 결국 우리 세대에 있어서 '텍스트'라는 것은 더 이상 큰 의미를 가지지 않는 것이 아닐까, 하는 질문으로 이어진다.


책마을 정모 술자리에서 이런 문제를 떠올리게 되었고, 또 이틀 후에 있었던 다른 술자리에서 이 문제가 주제만 바꾸어 다시 제기되었다. 가라타니 고진의 <근대 문학의 종언> 테제와 문학평론가 조영일의 한국 (문단) 문학 비판에 대한 이야기가 쟁점이 되었는데, 이른바 서브컬쳐 문학을 통하여 '문학의 역습'이랄까, '문학의 헤게모니 전환'이라는 것이 가능하지 않을까, 하는 조영일의 관점에 대한 이야기였다고 정리할 수 있겠다. 이는 고진의 테제를 수용하지만, 그래도 정말로 '문학(텍스트)' 전반이 죽지는 않았을 것이라는, 어떻게 본다면 문학에 대한 보수주의적/수호자적 입장이라고 볼 수 있을 것 같다. 조영일의 관점에서, 죽은 것은 '문학'이 아니라 '한국 문단 문학'이다.
 
 술자리 이야기가 으레 그렇듯, 주제가 하나에 집중 되었다기 보다는 산발적인 이야기들로 이어졌는데, 내가 상당히 재미있게 느낀 부분은 앞서 이야기했던 '야설'에 조영일이 기대를 걸고 있는 것 처럼 보이는 서브컬쳐 문학을, 이를테면 판타지 소설이나 라이트노벨과 같은 것들, 혹은 팬픽을 대입해볼 수 있지 않을까, 라는 생각이 들었기 때문이다. 이미 많은 서브컬쳐 커뮤니티/블로그들이나, 심지어 책마을 안에서도 '야설의 종언'과 마찬가지로 '환상문학의 종언'이나 '라이트노벨의 위기'와 같은 것들이 이야기 되고 있기 때문이다.
 
 내 생각으로, 현재 한국 판타지 소설 시장의 흐름은 대략 이렇게 정리될 수 있을 것 같다.
 
 1. 대중성과 유명세를 확보한 기존 작가들 + '문학'을 표방하는 환상 문학 시장 - 기존 작품에 대한 애장판 출시와, 작가 개인의 색깔을 유지한 신작 발표. SF 등 기타 장르 문학 독자들과 함께 상대적으로 '고급 문학'을 표방하는 매니아층
 
 2. '게임 판타지' 시장(혹은 양판소?) - 어느 샌가 시장의 주류가 되어버린, '온라인 게임'을 소재로 한 작품들.
 
 3. 라이트 노벨 화 - 기존 '판타지 소설' 작가들이 '라이트노벨' 시장으로 진출
 
 4. 기타..
 
 여기서 시장의 규모등에 대한 명확한 통계를 내긴 힘들 것 같은데, 일단 1번의 경우 일정 정도의 '매니아'들에 의해 지탱되고 있는 시장이고, 2번의 경우 주로 대여점 수요에 의하여 충족되있는 것으로 보이며, 3번의 '한국형 라이트 노벨'들은 시장의 새로운 경향으로 인기를 얻고 있지 않나(혹은 그렇게 기대를 모으지 않았었나), 하는 판단이 든다. 다만 최근 일본 라이트 노벨 시장의 경우를 참조했을 때 라이트 노벨은 작품 본연의 매력으로 팔린다기 보다는(그랬던 때도 있었으나, 이제는 그렇지 못하다.) 미디어웍스(애니화/만화화)를 통한 인기를 통해 겨우 시장성을 유지하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있는데, 그렇다고 했을 때 미디어웍스의 가능성이 일본의 경우 보다도 힘든 편인 '한국형 라이트 노벨'들이 얼마나 버틸 수 있을지 미지수라고 생각 된다. 그리고 그것보다도 중요한 것은, '게임판타지'건 '한국형 라이트노벨'이건 어쨌든 (조영일을 포함한) 일부 '기성 문학' 씬의 관점에서 "요새 젊은이들에게 인기가 있는" '새로운 문학'이라고 평가되는 '서브 문학' 장르 역시 이미 문학/작품 본연의 힘(텍스트)이 아니라, '게임'이나 '애니화'라는 다른 매체의 인기에 의존하게 되었다는 슬픈 현실이겠다. 이는 비록 그 양상은 다르지만, '야설(텍스트)'에서 '야동(영상)'으로 매체 자체가 변화했던 것과 마찬가지의 구조를 가지고 있는 것이 아닐까?


지금까지의 이야기를 이렇게 정리해보겠다. "우리 세대에 있어서 '문학(텍스트) 본연의 힘'이라는 것은 사라진 것이 아닐까? 그 것의 역할은 끝난 것이 아닐까? 일단 이미 문학/텍스트는 전혀 '읽히지 않고' 있지 않은가? '스크롤의 압박'이라는 단어가 말해주듯, 그 내용을 떠나 '텍스트'라는 매체 자체가 이미 우리 세대와 거리가 먼 것이 된 것이 아닐까! 그 반론으로 서브컬쳐 문학을 제시한다면, 난 위에서 이야기했듯이 이미 그런 것들이 다른 매체(야동)으로 대체되었거나 혹은 다른 매체(게임, 애니메이션)의 인기에 영합하여 겨우 유지되고 있다고 반박하겠다.

 자, 여기서 좀 더 무리수를 던져보겠다. 그 때 술자리에서는 팬픽션(이하 팬픽) 이야기도 등장했는데, 내 생각이 그러하다면 여전히 젊은 세대, 특히 아이돌 팬덤 사이에서 융성한 인기를 누리고 있는 팬픽은 어떻게 된 것이냐? 라는 이야기가 나왔다. 그러나 마찬가지로, 그 양상은 다르지만 팬픽 역시도 점차 고립화되고, 또 사라지고 있는 상황이라고 생각한다. 내가 한창 천리안과 하이텔로 팬픽을 읽던 시절만 하더라도 팬덤과 팬픽 문화는 '분리 될 수 없는 것'이였다. 팬픽 문화라는 것 자체가 팬덤, 팬클럽 문화의 하위 개념이였던 것이다. 그러나 주로 10대 소녀들이 대부분인 팬 사이트에서 동성애/성인물 성격의 팬픽들에 대한 논란이 계속되고, 그 뿐 아니라 잡팬 성향이 강한 팬픽 작가들 자체가 배타적 성격의 팬덤 문화에 반발하게 되면서 많은 팬픽 향유층들은 팬사이트에서 분리되어, 'Only 팬픽'을 지향하는 팬픽 사이트로 이동하게 된다. (주1) 팬클럽 문화에는 아직까지도 팬픽 문화에서 파생된 코드들이 남아있긴 하지만 - 이를테면 '커플링'이라던가 - 오히려 이렇게 특정한 코드들만이 팬 문화에 흡수되고 팬픽 자체는 '퇴출'되어버렸다는 것은 우리에게 시사하는 바가 있다. 팬픽 문화는 더 이상 일반적인 팬덤 문화와 섞일 수 없는 무언가가 되어버렸다. 일반적인 아이돌 팬의 입장에서, 본격적인 팬픽 향유층은 마치 '오타쿠/동인녀'처럼 여겨지는 경향도 있다.

 그렇다면 팬픽이 도대체 앞서 이야기했던 것들과 무슨 상관이 있는가? H.O.T, 젝스키스, 클릭비, 신화 등으로 이어졌던 (00년대 초반까지의) 아이돌 팬 문화는 팬픽을 제외하면 방송에 노출되는 아이돌의 모습 말고는 다른 무언가를 접할 수 없던, 상대적으로 자료들이 부족한 상황이었다. 그리고 부족한 자료들로 충족할 수 없는 팬들의 마음을 팬픽의 '상상력'이 채워주었던 것이다. 따라서 팬픽이나 커플링 놀이는 팬들 고유의 즐거움으로, 사실 '오빠들'의 존재와 상관 없이 독립적으로 즐거운 창작 행위였다. 그러나 시대 상으로 신화를 기준으로 하여, 동방신기, SS501, 슈퍼주니어 등등 요즘의 아이돌 문화로 진행되면서 아이돌 팬 문화 자체에 큰 변모가 생긴다. 이제는 공중파 방송 뿐 아니라 수많은 케이블 채널과 멤버들의 개인 활동 등을 통해 거의 매일매일 신선한 아이돌들의 모습을 만날 수 있다. 예전에는 팬들이 특정한 방송 스케줄을 기다리고만 있었다면, 이제는 오히려 수많은 스케줄들, 수많은 자료들을 팬들이 따라잡기 바쁜 상황이 된 것이다. 여기서 '오빠들의 빈 자리를 채워주던 팬픽의 상상력'의 역할은 줄어들게 된다. 게다가 인터넷을 통한 팬 문화의 진전은 마음만 먹으면 과거에서 현재까지 아이돌들이 출연한 영상 자료들을 모두 수집할 수 있게 만들어주었다. 그리고 이제는 연예기획사나 아이돌 역시도, 자신들이 '커플링'이 팬들에게 주는 즐거움을 알기 때문에 방송에서 의도적으로 이러한 커플링 상황을 연출하기도 한다. 더 이상 팬들끼리 팬픽을 쓰고 커플링 놀이를 하면서 보낼 시간이 없다! 이미 기획사나 방송국이 이러한 즐길 거리를 충분히 제공해주기 때문이다. (특히 최근 유행하는 케이블 프로그램의 '아이돌 리얼 다큐'들은, 그야말로 팬픽의 방송화나 다름 없는 것이다.) 그 것은 팬픽의 분리로 인한 팬 문화의 빈 공간을 무엇이 채웠는지를 보여주는 것이다. 팬픽이 사라진 빈 공간은, 이제 '제공된' 영상 자료들을 움짤로 편집하고, 자작 영상을 만들고, 이에 만족하지 못하면 직접 '직캠'을 찍으러 가는 것으로 채워졌다. 이렇게 수없이 많은 영상이 범람하는 아이돌 시대의 팬들에겐, 이제 자기들끼리 소설을 쓰고 이를 즐길 필요가 없어진 것이다. 따라서 팬클럽 문화와 팬픽 문화의 분리는, 이러한 '매체의 전환'과도 떼어놓고 생각할 수 없는 것이다.

 결국 우리 세대에 있어서 진정한 '텍스트 향유층'이란, 아직도 굳건히 소라넷을 지키고 있는 야설 독자들이나, 주류 시장과 분리된 장르 문학 매니아층이나, 팬덤과 분리되어 팬픽 사이트를 세운 언니들이나 그 성격을 막론하고 '야동 시대 / 미디어 웍스 시대 / 케이블 시대'에서 '소수자'에 불과하게 되었다. 그리고 그렇다는 이야기는, 이러한 소수자를 제외한 대다수들에게 있어서 더이상 '텍스트 향유'라는 것은 무의미해져버렸다는 이야기가 아닐까? 결국 텍스트는 우리 세대와 아주 거리가 먼 무언가가 되고 있는 것이 아닐까. 우리 세대의 새로운 목소리를 만들어내야한다는 목표를 가지고 있는 입장에서, 더 이상 '텍스트'라는 전통적인 방법으로는 우리 세대와 소통할 수 없을지도 모른다는 증거들은 참으로 '참담하게' 다가온다. 그러나 동시에, 전통적인 영역이 아닌, 새로운 영역을 통한 '이야기 하기'나 '개입'이 요구되는 것이 아닌가, 하는 생각도 하게 되는 것이다. 닷새 동안의 휴가는, 이러한 고민을 좀 더 확장시킬 수 있는 계기가 아니었나, 하고 생각하게 된다.


 주1) 아이돌 팬덤과 팬픽 문화의 분리는 거칠게 말해서 다음과 같은 역사를 가지고 있다.

 아이돌 팬픽의 기원에 대해 다양한 설이 있지만, 많은 사람들이 지금같은 의미에서 팬픽의 기원은 '젝스키스 팬픽'에 두고 있다. 시작은 H.O.T가 먼저했다, 아니다 태지보이스가 먼저다 등등 이야기는 많지만, 지금과 같은 형태로 팬픽이 정립된 것은, 그리고 '작가들'의 배출이라는 점에서 보았을 때 젝키 팬픽을 '기원'으로 보는 것이 타당한 것 같다. 그러나 대중적으로 인기가 높았던 H.O.T 팬픽들이 더 자주 소개되었고, 그 중 일부는 PC 통신 소설의 출판 붐을 타고 출판되기도 했다.

 이후 대중음악시장에서 차지하는 아이돌의 비중이 높아지면서 팬픽 역시 높은 인기를 누리게 된다. 그리고 10대 소녀들이 대다수인 팬덤의 성격 상 주로 아이돌 그룹 멤버들에 대한 성적 판타지를 부각하는 방식으로 팬픽이 창작된다. 여기서 수위가 높은 동성애 묘사에 대한 내부 비판 역시 제기되기 시작한다. (이것은 지금도 지속되는 논란이기도 하다.) 게다가 젝키 시절 부터 높은 인기를 누리던 몇몇 팬픽 작가들이 시대의 흐름에 따라 다른 아이돌의 팬질을 하면서, 다른 아이돌의 팬픽을 쓰면서 갈등이 생기기도 한다. 00년대 초반까지만 해도 아이돌 팬덤의 충성심이 대단했기 때문에, '잡팬'을 허용하지 않는 분위기가 강했기 때문이다. 팬픽 작가들이 잡팬 성향으로 흘러가면서인지, 아니면 잡팬 문화가 조금씩 생겨나서 인지는 모르지만 점차 '아이돌 팬이기 때문에 그 아이돌의 팬픽을 읽는다'라는 사람들 보다 '팬픽 독자'라는 정체성을 가진 팬픽 향유층이 많아졌다. 자연스럽게 팬덤과 팬픽 문화 향유층의 갈등이 심화되었고, 많은 팬픽 작가들이 팬덤을 떠나 독립 팬픽 사이트를 구성하게 되었다. 게다가 10대 미성년자 팬들이 많은 팬덤과, 성적 수위 측면에서 20대 성향이 강한 팬픽 문화 창작층의 세대적 괴리 역시 팬덤과 팬픽 사이의 분리를 촉발하게 된 면이 있다.

    텍스트를 향유한다기 보다는 텍스트로부터 산출되는 이미지를 향유하는 시대가 되었습니다. 상상력이란 결국 이미지를 만들어내는 과정이 아니냐고 할 수 있겠지만, 분명한 것은 지금의 "텍스트"에서 "소비자"가 얻어내는 이미지는 스스로가 의도하였다기 보다는 일련의 "판매자"가 "그렇게 상상하도록" 유도한 것이라는 것이 가장 큰 문제라고 할 수 있겠지요.

    문학에서 이야기하는 "통로와 소통"의 문제는 대중문화에서 의도하는 일종의 "담론의 유도"와는 엄연히 구분되어야 할 문제입니다. 하지만 지금 우리가 향유하는 소위 "텍스트"들은 이 둘 사이의 경계를 거칠게 허물고 있는 일종의 파괴자가 아닐까 싶네요.
